Flu Research Study

Vaccines for Influenza Prevention in Schools (VIPS)

VIPS Flu Research StudyThe school-based influenza vaccination program, also known as Vaccines for Influenza Prevention in Schools (VIPS), is a research study developed jointly by investigators from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Scott & White Clinic in Temple, Texas, in collaboration with independent school districts from Academy, Belton, Bryan, College Station, Holland, Rogers, Salado, Temple, Troy and Waco in central Texas and the Bell County Health Department.

The goal of the VIPS research study is to help prevent flu by improving flu vaccination in students and staff. Studies suggest that by giving flu vaccines to school children there will be fewer flu infections in children, their families and the community.

Why vaccinate school children against the flu?

When your child gets sick with the flu, he/she can miss school and pass it to others in your family. School children often pass flu to other children in class or at play. Parents often stay home to care for their sick children or go to work sick. The purpose of this research study is to learn if we can stop flu in children and the community by vaccinating children and staff in schools.
