Audiology
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders (NIDCD) research has indicated that:
- Hearing loss affects approximately 17 in 1,000 children under age 18.
- About two to three out of every 1,000 children in the U.S. are born deaf or hard-of-hearing. Nine out of every 10 children who are born deaf are born to parents who can hear.
- Approximately 314 in 1,000 people over age 65 have hearing loss, and 40 to 50 percent of people 75 and older have a hearing loss
- Ten million Americans have suffered irreversible noise-induced hearing loss, and 30 million more are exposed to dangerous noise levels each day.
Your ear allows you to detect passing waves of sound energy and thus hear the sounds of the world around you. Most of the ear is hidden inside the head, so you are seldom aware of the job your ears are doing until they begin to fail. Reasons for hearing loss can range from physical changes within the ear caused by aging, an injury or infection that damaged part of the ear, exposure to loud noise, an inherited condition, or exposure to toxic medicines.
Audiology Staff
The Audiology staff at Scott & White is comprised of Drs. Michael Moul, Ph.D., Elizabeth Pasichnyk, Au.D. and Dennis Williams, Ph.D. As professional audiologists, Moul, Pasichnyk and Williams work in conjunction with the Division of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), making referrals to physicians when hearing or balance problems require medical or surgical evaluation or treatment. By combining a patient’s complete history with a variety of specialized auditory and vestibular assessments, they can determine appropriate treatment of patients’ hearing and balance problems.
Scott & White’s audiologists and hearing aid specialists work with you to make the best all-around choice when it comes to hearing loss remedies and therapies. Treatment may range from a variety of hearing aids to implants. The treatment choice should reflect your needs, preferences and budget. To help you decide, we'll discuss with you your lifestyle and level of activity, physical characteristics, medical conditions, cosmetic and style preference, and what is reasonable for your pocketbook.
To find out if you are a candidate for a consultation by our audiologists, take our hearing self-assessment test (pdf).
