Looking for Excellence in Internal Medicine Education?

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Texas A&M Health Science Center at Scott & White.

Internal Medicine training is challenging. Our training program offers you the opportunity to maximize your training and become the most competent internist possible, all within a structured, supervised, didactic, highly professional and friendly atmosphere. It is a team effort, and our residency team, under the dedicated leadership of our chairman of Medicine, is committed to education, research (see resident research) and quality patient care through innovation and technology.

My name is Stephen Sibbitt and my involvement in residency education began with my graduation from the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UTMB in Galveston, Texas, initially as chief resident and then associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency at UTMB, and now as program director at Texas A&M/Scott & White. I joined Scott & White and became a faculty member at Texas A&M Health Science Center in March of 2003. I consider myself privileged to be part of an energetic team that views residency education as a core value and its highest priority.

I am pleased you have taken the time to visit our website and I hope you will find it worthwhile. If you have any questions or would like more information than what this site provides, please contact us. You can also view our presentation (pdf) (pps) with the highlights of our program. Please note that our applications are all taken through ERAS.

Over the past year, upholding our core value of resident education has led to significant changes in our program. In particular, we have designed and implemented a new call system, improving resident autonomy in the clinical decision-making process while maintaining appropriate faculty supervision to guide residents through their growth as internists. Other program initiatives have promoted a team concept in patient care (with the resident as the team leader), improved resident-patient continuity and strengthened the academic and teaching environment.

Our efforts have resulted in an even stronger residency program focused on education and providing our residents with the skills required to enter fellowships or general practices as highly competent internists.

As a statement of the quality of our training program, we recently were granted a full five-year accreditation cycle (the maximum possible) by the ACGME, based on our recent evaluation by the national Residency Review Committee (RRC). In addition to our outstanding categorical and preliminary Internal Medicine programs, we offer highly competitive fellowship training in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, and Pulmonary Critical Care.

Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, Scott & White Hospital and Clinic, and the Central Texas Veteran’s Center together create a unique integrated health care system and academic medical center. Our goal is to provide superior training in Internal Medicine in a friendly atmosphere, with balance and flexibility to provide the background for a career in primary care or subspecialty medicine. We expect our residents to develop not only as excellent physicians, but also as scientists, teachers, communicators and humanists.

Our Central Texas patient population includes a rapidly growing area of over 2,000,000 people, while we also serve as a tertiary referral center for the southwestern United States. While many of our patients are admitted to teaching services, our growth has prompted us to also develop hospitalist-covered services. Residents are involved in the care of patients in all settings, from the emergency room and intensive care units to the outpatient clinic.

We also have a nationally recognized non-profit HMO, and residents receive experience and education in the principles of managed care. Our affiliation with the Central Texas Veteran's Center complements the training at Scott & White with exposure to a large federally funded healthcare system.

Our ever-changing curriculum adapts to meet the needs of today’s internists and is available to our residents via our intranet. Residents receive support from reference librarians, clinical pharmacists, research nurses and computer specialists in medical informatics to support their clinical and research needs. To make chart access and review easier and more complete, we have a computerized electronic medical record which links to all of our primary care clinics. All hospital and clinic computers have access to reference software from Up-to-Date® and other major resources.

Scott & White opened a fully-digital new hospital, we enjoy a new Regional Health Education Center and Library and we offer an Ambulatory Surgical Pavilion.

We accept 16 categorical internal medicine residents and four preliminary positions per year and have over 160+ faculty in the Department of Medicine. A large faculty with a medium-sized residency promotes individual attention and excellent staff availability. Quality education does not have to come in big packages or large cities.
