Clinic Life
With the creation of the Department of Family Medicine in 1978, spearheaded by then-Chief of the Department of Radiology, Dr. John Montgomery, Scott & White embarked upon the creation of a thriving multi-clinic group practice unlike any in the state of Texas. The collegiality which marked the creation of the department is the hallmark of its continued growth and development.
This growth is demonstrated in the dynamic regional clinics that serve more than 186,000 patients through the Scott & White HMO. It is also evident through clinical research within the department that led to the creation of an AHQR-funded Practice Based Research Network. The integral role of Family Medicine within the Scott & White Clinic is evident in clinic leadership, with two active family physicians serving on the clinic board.
Clinical practice within the regional clinics is on the cutting edge of medicine. Each clinic is connected to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) database that allows real-time access to patient information via desktops, laptops and hand-helds. Gone are the days of searching for a chart, calling colleagues for follow-up on referrals and trying to determine what happened during the ER visit. The Scott & White EMR frees the physician to focus on the patient, not the paper.
Each physician and provider has access to up-to-the-minute medical information that allows the full implementation of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). Ready access to databases such as InfoRetriever and Up-to-Date allow for the practical application of EBM during the patient encounter. The use of hand-held computers brings this access to the patient's bedside and to the exam room.
If this sounds like the dream of Family Medicine, it is the reality of Scott & White. For more information, explore the physician recruitment pages or contact Jason Culp.
