Continuing Education
The Continuing Education Department supports the life long learning of physicians, nurses and health care professionals through providing the highest quality continuing education programs. The department focuses on maintaining Scott & White's accreditation to provide Continuing Medical and Continuing Nursing Education.
Continuing Medical Education
Scott & White is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (CME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. All programs offer Category I credit. CME is responsible for more than 200 directly sponsored activities and 18 jointly sponsored activities annually. The kinds of activities range from accreditation and oversight of 18 regularly scheduled conferences to production of 12 lectureships. Programs have been held in Austin, San Antonio, South Padre Island and Crested Butte, Colorado.
The CME Department is also responsible for Advanced Life Support Courses. Approximately 12 Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses are offered annually. About 25 Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses are offered, with courses in Temple as well as out-of-town locations. Approximately 30 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses are offered in Temple as well as out-of-town locations. A newer course, the Fundamentals of Critical Care, began two years ago and is held nine times a year.
Continuing Nursing Education
Scott & White is also an approved provider of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. All designated activities meet Type I criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward relicensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. Scott & White provides approximately 1300 contact hours yearly through 190 activties. Many of these activities are marketed and accept attendees from outside of Scott & White.
Consultation and Outreach
Scott & White's Department of Continuing Education provides consultation to area hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, hospice and industries. Some of the clinical areas of expertise are Ostomy/Skin Care, Oncology, Infection Control, Endocrinology, Pediatrics, Urology, Cardiology and Neonatology.
Other Programs
Scott & White is also approved to provide continuing education by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and the American Psychological Association. Many programs also obtain continuing education for social workers and chaplains.
