Orthopedic Trauma
Level I Trauma Center
As the only Level 1 Trauma Center between San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, Scott & White mobilizes coordinated care from general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, anesthesiology, intensivists and many other committed individuals.
Technology + Teamwork
From Quarterly (Winter 2004)
The care of trauma patients calls upon the diverse talents of a number of individuals. Severely injured patients routinely require coordinated care from general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, anesthesiology, intensivists and many other committed individuals. All are involved in assessing the patient and choosing the best course of action.
A Leader in Trauma Care
As the only Level 1 Trauma Center between San Antonio, Houston and Dallas, Scott & White is a leader in providing trauma care, and one element of that care is orthopedics. Robert Probe, M.D., is the director of the Division of Orthopedic Trauma, and knows firsthand the challenges of working in a Level 1 center.
"Patients requiring care of fractures come in many forms," Dr. Probe said. "Children with falls from a 'jungle-gym,' the victims of motor vehicle accidents and elderly patients with fractured hips all have a common goal — to return to the same level of activity that they enjoyed prior to their injuries."
In partnering with patients to reach this goal, Scott & White surgeons employ the latest imaging technology, computer-assisted surgical techniques and the most modern fracture fixation devices available.
Latest Technology
Because of generous gifts to the Scott & White Research Fund, members of the Orthopedics Department are now actively developing revolutionary fracture implants while other members are trying to understand the basic proteins that signal the body to heal a fractured bone. It is hoped that these mechanical and biologic advances will provide future generations with better outcomes following their injuries.
Highest Level of Multi-Specialty Care
"As a Level 1 Trauma Center, we provide the highest level of care to our patients, from the minute they get on the helicopter or ambulance, to when they arrive in the ER to when they are rushed to the operating room," Dr. Probe said. "Our trauma care is a multi-specialty approach that involves different sub-specialties working together for the patient. And it is that teamwork that saves lives."
