Qualifications for Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

If you weigh 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight and the usual diets have failed, bariatric surgery for weight loss can help you lose weight and keep it off. However, bariatric surgery may not be the best option for you. To learn more, talk to your primary care physician and attend a free informational seminar.

To qualify for weight loss surgery, you must:

  • Attend one of our free informational seminars
  • Be 18 to 70 years old
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of:
    • Greater than 40 with no co-morbid conditions, or
    • 35 to 40 with co-morbid conditions*
  • Be a non-smoker who consumes minimal or no alcohol
  • Have a referral from your primary care physician
  • Have had a mammogram within one year prior to surgery if you are female and more than 40 years old
  • Have had a screening colonoscopy within 10 years prior to surgery if you are more than 50 years old

*Co-morbid conditions caused by obesity include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Sleep apnea
  • Asthma
  • Arthritis and joint disease
  • Reflux disease and heartburn
