Electrodiagnostic Studies

Our board-certified physiatrists are diagnostic specialists. They’re specially trained in the complexities of your nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

In PM&R, we use state-of-the-art testing equipment combined with computer technology to diagnose disorders of your peripheral nervous system.

Electrodiagnostic Studies

  • Require a board-certified physician to perform the procedure and interpret the results
  • Are minimally invasive procedures
  • Reveal how your nerves and muscles are functioning in real time
  • Help identify the cause of your:
    • Numbness
    • Weakness
    • Tingling
    • Muscle cramping
    • Pain

Two Types of Electrodiagnostic Studies

  • Electromyography (EMG) – tests that record the electrical activity in your muscles
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS) – tests that measure the flow of electricity through your nerves

Benefits of Electrodiagnostic Studies

  • Provide an expansive evaluation of peripheral, nerve and muscle function
  • Identify neuromuscular disorders
  • Provide a basis for:
    • Most effective treatment approach
    • Prognosis for recovery
    • Drug therapy
