Williamson County students offered chance to participate in Scott & White Healthcare – Round Rock’s junior volunteer program
Round Rock, Texas – Scott & White Healthcare - Round Rock is offering 25 Williamson County area high school students the opportunity to see the behind the scenes functions of a hospital through its Annual three-week-long Junior Volunteer Explorer Program. The program officially kicks off June 7 and will run until June 29. Applications are now being accepted.
High school students from across Williamson County interested in health care as a possible career path will learn first-hand about 15 different areas at the hospital. The Scott & White Junior Volunteer Explorer Program is unique in that the students rotate throughout these different areas and get exposed to all aspects of a hospital environment. The Emergency Department, Cardio Pulmonary, Physical Therapy, and Labor and Delivery are a few of the many specialties offering these students a first hand look at the day-to-day operations of the hospital. Students will also be able to view procedures from the Operating Rooms and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, for example.
As part of the program, students will attend weekly group meetings with guest speakers from the hospital. Among the guest speakers are orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists and the President of Medical Staff.
“We hope to provide these students with hands-on experience in all the aspects that make a hospital function successfully on a day-to-day basis. It’s really a team effort,” said Belinda Curtis, volunteer services manager at Scott & White – Round Rock.
A graduation luncheon is provided at the end of the three-week program where Scott & White – Round Rock CEO Ernie Bovio talks to the students about what they learned.
Applications are due April 15, 2011. For more information on the Junior Volunteer Explorer Program, contact Belinda Curtis at 512-509-9175. (firstname.lastname@example.org) or download an application online at roundrock.sw.org and click on “Volunteer Opportunities.”
