Update regarding steroid pain medication
CENTRAL TEXAS – In early October, Scott & White Healthcare was made aware that certain batches of a medication made by New England Compounding Center (NECC) used across the country in managing joint pain may cause fungal infection after injection. At that time, all medication from this manufacturer was removed from Scott & White supplies. (See prior posting)
In a new advisory dated October 15, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending we contact all Scott & White patients that have received ANY injectable NECC product since May 21, 2012. This is being done "out of an abundance of caution."
Patients who received steroid injections at our Scott & White Temple anesthesia pain clinic, Killeen pain clinic, or Waco pain clinic, or in our Temple interventional radiology department will be notified by letter. Additionally, patients who received an injection of an NECC-packaged medication for a specific condition called “macular degeneration” at our Scott & White Pavilion Eye Clinic prior to October are being contacted.
At this time there are no known cases of fungal contamination with the products our patients received. But as a simple precaution, we are notifying them to be watchful for possible signs of infection.
If a patient has signs of infection, we are asking them to contact their physician or seek medical attention. If they have questions, they are asked to contact the Scott & White Patient Advisory Nurse at 254-724-7037.
