$2 million challenge a success for children's hospital

CENTRAL TEXAS, Texas –Just two months after accepting the $2 million matching grant offer that stipulated McLane Children's raise $2 million to get $2 million from the Mabee Foundation, the Scott & White Healthcare Foundation announces it has succeeded in meeting the challenge.

"Donations large and small have been coming in, and we could not be happier with this successful result," said John Boyd III, MD, CEO and chief medical officer of McLane Children’s Hospital. "It is very difficult to express how proud I am of our wonderful community. What our children’s hospital community … which is the whole region … has accomplished has propelled us along our path to establish our children’s campus, where every medical need for our children will be provided."

This challenge grant was offered by the Mabee Foundation, a foundation based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that gives to charitable organizations in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Arkansas. The term "challenge" means that a specific action or result must be achieved before money is released. This challenge required that McLane Children’s raise $2 million to receive the $2 million grant offered by Mabee Foundation.

"This $2 million will help put a multi-story pediatric specialty physician clinic building right next to the McLane Children’s Hospital,” said Reddy Beeram, MD, chairman of pediatrics for Scott & White Healthcare. "We will bring the clinic care and the hospital care together on one campus. It will make it even more convenient for the children and families we serve to access the high level medical care they need."

The extra $2 million helps complete the inaugural McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White campaign. That $38 million campaign was created in 2010 when plans for the children’s hospital were announced.

"The generosity of the community has proved to be overwhelming," said Bill DiGaetano, chairman of the McLane Children’s board of visitors. "It makes me proud to be involved with this project, but especially to be a part of this McLane Children’s Hospital community."

McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White encompasses 112 inpatient beds — 48 private rooms and 16 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) rooms, with another 48 NICU beds at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.  The NICU unit cares for almost 1,000 newborns each year, with their health outcomes ranking among the top 10 percent of neonatal care units in the United States. McLane Children’s has been designed to support staff in delivering family-centered care in a healing and secure environment.
