Scott & White Healthcare transforming how it delivers care

- New electronic medical record to change patient experience -

CENTRAL TEXAS – Scott & White Healthcare is transforming the way it delivers care to patients as part of a new electronic medical record system. This includes a new patient portal allowing Scott & White patients to go online, schedule appointments, obtain lab results, communicate with doctors, order prescription refills and utilize a mobile application. This Fall, welcome kiosks will allow patients to check themselves in when arriving for an appointment much like check-in at the airport.

Scott & White’s Round Rock Region (includes clinics and hospitals in Georgetown, North Austin, Hutto, Pflugerville, Lago Vista, Taylor, Leander and Cedar Park, Texas) was the first in the Scott & White System that serves Central Texas to complete the rollout as of June 2013, joining a group of national health systems known for their leadership in the coordinated, integrated delivery of medical care.  And as of August 1, the new Scott & White Hospital - College Station (which officially opens on August 19) and its area clinics in College Station and Brenham have now gone live with Epic.  In early 2014, Scott & White Memorial Hospital - Temple and its regional clinics will launch.

"The implementation process is seamless for patients and represents a fresh start for Scott & White; we’re completely re-engineering the way we deliver care to our Central Texas community," said Matthew Chambers, chief information officer at Scott & White Healthcare.  "The needs of patients who retrieve health information have changed and they require more convenient access to services via mobile devices and other technology." Digital medical record systems can make health care safer and more efficient by providing physicians easy access to a patient's history, prescriptions, lab results and other information.

"Health care today is more complex than ever and patients have multiple physicians caring for a variety of different health issues," said Scott & White Round Rock Region Chief Medical Officer Rob Watson, MD. "Having an integrated, instantly updated medical record allows us as physicians the access we need to all of our patient’s health records. This assimilation of information is critical to avoid redundancy, make accurate decisions, and utilize our patient’s valuable time efficiently."

For the last several years, Scott & White has utilized its own electronic medical record allowing patients to come to any Scott & White location where their records are available immediately by a physician without having to physically carry charts, lab work, or radiology tests performed in the past. "This new system is significantly more robust, interactive, and changes the way we deliver care to our patients," added Chambers.
