McLane Children's verified as Level II pediatric trauma center

CENTRAL TEXAS, Texas – McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White has been verified as a Level II pediatric trauma center, making it the only pediatric trauma center in the region. McLane Children’s executives were notified of the result and verification on July 1, following site visits by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma.

"This means we are a major trauma facility," said John L. Boyd III, MD, chief executive officer and chief medical officer of McLane Children’s. "We have an emergency department that is specifically for children. We’ve been verified to care for the most serious pediatric trauma cases. It is one more reason we are a resource for the children and families in this region of Central Texas."

The on-site review was conducted by a team from the ACS in May. The ACS verification is valid through May 9, 2016.

"Achieving verification by the ACS Committee on Trauma shows that we meet the highest national standards and can provide a ready team of specialists to respond to the most critical situations," said Terry Valentino, RN, trauma and transport director for McLane Children’s. "Texas requires trauma centers seeking Level I or II status to become both verified from the ACS and designated by the Texas Department of State Health Service. The process for the state designation usually takes two to three weeks after the ACS verification has been reported."

Every department at McLane Children’s is a part of the Trauma Team.

"Trauma care requires a set of specialties to be on-call with 24-hour availability for patients coming to our hospital," said Danny Little, MD, pediatric surgeon and medical director for the McLane Children’s trauma program. "Our team is multidisciplinary, and brings together surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, radiologists, physician specialists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, social workers and child life specialists – all specifically trained to care for children. As we care for the acutely injured child and their anxious family, we also support programs in outreach education, injury prevention, and child abuse prevention."
