South Texas couple gives $6 million to Scott & White Healthcare

- Gift to benefit Bone and Joint Institute -

CENTRAL TEXAS, Texas – Retired South Texas banker Glen E. Roney, and his wife Rita K., have made a $6 million gift to the Scott & White Healthcare Foundation. This substantial and generous gift will enhance the capabilities of the Scott & White Bone and Joint Institute, currently under construction on the Temple campus. In recognition of the gift and the nearly 30 years of service from the couple, Scott & White is naming the new facility the Glen E. and Rita K. Roney Bone and Joint Institute.

"The Scott & White model of integrated care has been designed into the structure of this institute," said Robert Pryor, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Scott & White Healthcare. "Our model will differentiate this program from all others in the region and will escalate the recognition of Scott & White as a leader in health care excellence. We are grateful to Glen and Rita K. for their vision to enhance orthopaedic care and their passion for Scott & White."

Scott & White broke ground on the new 75,000 square-foot, three-story orthopaedic facility in May 2012. Located in Temple, the facility will be adjacent to Scott & White Memorial Hospital and the Scott & White Pavilion. When the first patients enter the new building they will have access to clinical, medical, surgical and rehabilitative care in a single location.

"We feel that it is both an honor and a pleasure to be so closely affiliated with Scott & White," said Mr. Roney. "The orthopaedic department holds incredible promise for the future, and we recognize the need to help open this new facility and provide support to advance musculoskeletal care and innovations at Scott & White."

Rita K. Roney agreed."We hope that our gift will help bring dynamic change to the face of orthopaedic care here in both Texas and across the nation."

The new facility will be completed in September 2013.

"The history of the Scott & White Orthopaedic Department is a strong one, having been nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report as ‘high performing’," said Robert Probe, MD, chairman of the Scott & White department of orthopaedic surgery. "The heartfelt enthusiasm of Glen and Rita K. Roney to provide a gift of this magnitude for our new Bone and Joint Institute will ensure that our comprehensive, collaborative program continues to be one of the premier services at Scott & White. The Roney Institute will be unique to the state of Texas and will introduce a new model of musculoskeletal care to the national orthopaedic scene."

As a member of the Board of Trustees, the governing body for Scott & White Healthcare, Mr. Roney has served for 28 years. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Roney led a successful career in banking, attaining one of the pinnacle banking positions in Texas finance as founder of Texas Regional Bancshares and its subsidiary Texas State Bank. The Roneys reside in McAllen, Texas.

"The list of community and public service by the Roneys fills pages," said Nancy Birdwell, chief development officer of Scott & White Healthcare and executive vice president and CEO of the Scott & White Healthcare Foundation. "We are incredibly fortunate to have Glen and Rita K. Roney as lifetime supporters of the mission and vision of Scott & White. They fully believe in the important, life-saving work that we do at Scott & White, and their gift to the Bone and Joint Institute campaign is one more visible milestone for their legacy."

The $6 million gift will help Scott & White purchase leading-edge equipment for the new building, establish an endowed chair in the department of orthopaedics, and support the exciting research and education efforts in orthopaedics. $2.5 million of the gift will provide a dollar-for-dollar matching gift challenge for the ongoing Bone and Joint community campaign.

The Glen E. and Rita K. Roney Bone and Joint Institute will provide the capacity to care for a growing number of patients, many with increasing complexities needing specialized care. The Institute will uniquely offer a deep bench of fellowship-trained musculoskeletal specialists in one location, providing care in the areas of: hand, foot and ankle, joint replacement, musculoskeletal oncology, pediatric orthopaedics, spine, orthopaedic trauma, and sports medicine. Additionally, the Roney Institute will provide pain management and rehabilitative expertise, encouraging patients’ return to function and independence. This gift promises to provide the patients of Scott & White with the most advanced diagnostic capabilities, as well as the latest surgical and rehabilitative treatments. The Institute will benefit the patients of today while simultaneously providing for future generations through medical education and research.
