General Internal Medicine
What is an internist?
Our internal medicine physicians are board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and specialize in the care of adults. General internal medicine physicians provide integrated care for diseases of several organ systems including heart, lungs, digestive system, kidneys, joints, endocrine glands, and psychiatry. Most internists see patients in the clinic.
Why would I see an internal medicine doctor?
Adults often have an internist, or doctor of internal medicine, as their primary care physician to provide preventive care such as PAP smears, breast and prostate exams, immunizations and periodic screenings for osteoporosis, breast, colon and prostate cancer. Internists also provide long-term management of chronic diseases, management of cardiovascular risk factors (including hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol problems, obesity and smoking) to reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke, and can provide acute care services. As your primary care physician, an internist can refer you to a subspecialist and coordinate care for complex illnesses.
