Veronica Piziak, MD, PhD
Director, Endocrinology Division

Dr. Piziak is a Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, Director of the Division of Endocrinology at Scott & White, and principal physician for the Diabetes Education Center. She is well known throughout the world in her primary care work on Diabetes, Lipid disorders and Osteoporosis.

"I love patients. I love teaching. It's always rewarding to see how well patients with diabetes can do with the right information."

Lynn brings over 25 years of certified diabetes experience to the Diabetes Education Center, working with pediatrics, adult care, dialysis, hospital and clinic patients. She co-developed the first Diabetes Education Program at Scott & White in 1989, one of the first nationally certified programs in the State of Texas. And she knows how important it is for patients to make, and sustain, life changes to manage their condition.

"I enjoy teaching patients how to manage their diabetes, and seeing the difference it can make in their health in both the short and long terms."

Barbara received her B.S. in nursing from Lutheran Medical School of Nursing in St. Louis, MI, and has been a Scott & White Diabetes Educator for over 25 years. She has educated thousands of patients about their health and the importance of disease prevention through behavior changes. At the Diabetes Education Center, Barbara teaches people about diabetes, conducts diagnostics tests as a member of the Endocrinology team, works with patients with insulin pumps and helps run the Diabetes Support group started in 2008.

Debbie Smolik, RD, LD, CDE
Certified Diabetes Educator

Debbie has been a diabetes educator at Scott & White Hospital – Taylor, since 2002, and was one of the first in the nation to offer a certified education program sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. She has been involved in dietetics since 1976, working in nursing homes, hospitals and providing instruction to private patients. In addition to her diabetes education certification, Debbie also holds certificates in adult weight management and childhood and adolescent weight management.

Raynelle Shelley, RD, LD, CDE

"A strong family history of diabetes sparked my interest in this field.  Experiencing that moment when a patient 'gets it' keeps me here. This field is my passion."

Raynelle received her master’s degree in nutrition from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX. As a certified diabetes educator and certified insulin pump trainer at Scott & White Hospital – Round Rock, Raynelle provides weekly education in both group and individual settings at Scott & White facilities in Round Rock, Cedar Park and Georgetown (Sun City). She is also a writer, professional speaker and counselor in sports nutrition, eating disorders, child weight management, and head/neck cancer nutrition. Raynelle has also completed the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management.

Kristi Petty, RD, LD, CDE
Certified Diabetes Educator

Kristi received her bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. In addition to providing diabetes education, nutritional counseling and insulin pump training in the specialty clinic in Round Rock, she also serves patients at the Cedar Park clinic. Kristi provides both individual as well as group education.
