Metastatic Bone Disease

Bone metastases are cancer cells that have spread to the bone (rather than cancer cells that have started in the bone).

Metastatic Bone Disease

The most common types of cancer to spread to bone include:

  • Breast
  • Lung
  • Prostate
  • Kidney
  • Thyroid

When these tumors grow in bone, they may weaken the bone, causing:

  • Pain
  • Fracture

Treatment

Your orthopedic oncology surgeons work closely with medical oncology and radiation oncology to offer surgical options to prevent fracture and decrease morbidity when a tumor in bone is amenable to this.

When cancer has spread to your spine, we also offer stereotactic radiosurgery in conjunction with our radiation oncology colleagues.
