Wrist Pain

ExitCare ImageA wrist sprain happens when the bands of tissue that hold the wrist joints together (ligament) stretch too much or tear. A wrist strain happens when muscles or bands of tissue that connect muscles to bones (tendons) are stretched or pulled.

HOME CARE

  • Put ice on the injured area.

  • Put ice in a plastic bag.

  • Place a towel between your skin and the bag.

  • Leave the ice on for 15-20 minutes, 03-04 times a day, for the first 2 days.

  • Raise (elevate) the injured wrist to lessen puffiness (swelling).

  • Rest the injured wrist for at least 48 hours or as told by your doctor.

  • Wear a splint, cast, or an elastic wrap as told by your doctor.

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Follow up with your doctor as told. This is important.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • The fingers are puffy, very red, white, or cold and blue.

  • The fingers lose feeling (numb) or tingle.

  • The pain gets worse.

  • It is hard to move the fingers.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
