A Western or short leg walker is used to immobilize ankle fractures or severe sprains. It is designed to hold the foot at a 90 degree angle from the leg. Follow the directions for fitting and securing the walker with your foot flat on the footplate and your ankle at a right angle. Center your foot between the plastic uprights and fasten the straps starting over the foot and working up your leg. Adjustments after your swelling goes down may be needed. Do not bear any weight on your injury until your doctor approves. Loosen your walker and call your doctor right away if your foot becomes cold, blue, or numb.
