Care After

These instructions give you information on caring for yourself after your procedure. Your doctor may also give you more specific instructions. Call your doctor if you have any problems or questions after your procedure.


  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after you touch your vulva.

  • Wash the biopsy area 1 to 2 times a day. Use a mild, unscented soap and rinse with water. Gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Do not rub the area dry.

  • Check the biopsy area with a hand-held mirror to be sure it is healing well.

  • Do not have sex (intercourse) for 1 week. Ask your doctor when it is okay.

  • Wear loose cotton underwear. Do not wear tight-fitting pants.

  • Keep all follow-up visits with your doctor.

Finding out the results of your test

Ask when your test results will be ready. Make sure you get your test results.


  • You have pain that gets worse and is not helped by pain medicine.

  • Your vulva becomes puffy (swollen) or red.

  • You have a bad smell or fluid coming from your vulva.

  • You have a temperature by mouth above 102° F (38.9° C), not controlled by medicine.


  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
