Acute Urinary Retention, Male

Acute urinary retention is when you are unable to pee (urinate). This is a common in older males. Prostates can get bigger, which blocks the flow of pee.

HOME CARE

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • If you are sent home with a tube that drains the bladder (catheter), there will be a drainage bag attached to it.

  • Keep the drainage bag empty.

  • Keep the drainage bag lower than your catheter.

  • Drink enough fluids to keep your pee clear or pale yellow.

  • Keep all follow-up appointments.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You have chills.

  • You develop a fever.

  • You do not feel well.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
