Premature Rupture of Membranes

A sac made up of membranes surrounds the baby in the womb. Premature rupture of membranes is when the membranes break before labor begins. If this occurs before 37 weeks, it is called premature rupture of membranes.

HOME CARE

  • Follow your doctor's advice about activities and going to the hospital.

  • Do not use tampons. Use sanitary pads.

  • Do not have sex.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • Fluid leaks or gushes from the vagina.

  • You are bleeding from the vagina.

  • You have a fever of 100° F (37.8° C) or higher.

  • You have belly (abdominal) pain.

  • You do not feel the baby moving.
