Pleurisy

Pleurisy is an irritation (inflammation) and puffiness (swelling) of the lining of the lungs. It is often caused by an existing infection or disease. It can be hard to breathe and hurt to breathe. Coughing or deep breathing will make it hurt more.

HOME CARE

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Take your medicines (antibiotics) as told. Finish them even if you start to feel better.

  • Use a cool mist vaporizer to loosen mucus.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • Your lips, fingernails, or toenails are blue or dark.

  • You cough up blood.

  • You have a hard time breathing.

  • Your pain is not controlled with medicine or it lasts for more than 1 week.

  • Your pain spreads (radiates) into your neck, arms, or jaw.

  • You are short of breath or wheezing.

  • You develop a fever, rash, throw up (vomit), or faint.

  • Your pain gets worse.

  • You cough up more yellowish white (pus-like) mucus.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
