Phlebitis

Phlebitis is soreness in a vein that is caused by a blood clot close to the surface of the skin.

HOME CARE

  • Raise (elevate) the affected limb on a pillow.

  • Keep a warm packs on the affected vein.

  • Do not rub or massage the affected vein.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep your pee (urine) clear or pale yellow.

  • Do not smoke.

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • The phlebitis gets worse and you have more pain, puffiness (swelling), or redness.

  • You have trouble breathing or have chest pain.

  • You have a temperature by mouth above 102° F (38.9° C).

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
