Palpitations

ExitCare ImageA palpitation is the feeling that your heartbeat is irregular. It may feel like your heart is fluttering or skipping a beat. It may also feel like your heart is beating faster than normal. This is usually not a serious problem. In some cases, you may need more medical tests.

HOME CARE

  • Avoid:

  • Caffeine in coffee, tea, soft drinks, diet pills, and energy drinks.

  • Chocolate.

  • Alcohol.

  • Stop smoking if you smoke.

  • Reduce your stress and anxiety. Try:

  • A method that measures bodily functions so you can learn to control them (biofeedback).

  • Yoga.

  • Meditation.

  • Physical activity such as swimming, jogging, or walking.

  • Get plenty of rest and sleep.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You have chest pain.

  • You feel short of breath.

  • You have a very bad headache.

  • You feel dizzy or pass out (faint).

  • Your fast or irregular heartbeat continues after 24 hours.

  • Your palpitations occur more often.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
