Ohtahara syndrome is a neurological disorder. It causes seizures. The disorder affects newborns. It occurs usually within the first three months of life. Individuals with this disorder often have mental retardation. Or they may have other developmental impairments. The cause of the disorder is unknown.
There is no cure for this disorder. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Most drug therapy has limited effect.
This disorder often is fatal. Those who survive suffer from severe mental and physical impairment.
