Near Drowning

Near drowning blocks your airway for a little while. Having a blocked airway hurts your lungs. Near drowning can happen minutes or many hours after being under water. It can also happen from a lung injury that does not involve water, such as choking. Near drowning victims need medical help right away.

Follow all your doctor's instructions.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • Someone who was in the water in the past 24 hours is having problems.

  • You have a cough, trouble breathing, or chest pain.

  • You feel very tired or confused.

  • Your skin is pale or blue.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
