Nasal Foreign Body

A nasal foreign body is an object that is stuck in the nose. The object can make it hard to breathe or swallow. The object can also cause an infection. You need to get medical help right away.

HOME CARE

  • Do not try to remove the object yourself.

  • Breathe through the mouth to avoid swallowing the object.

  • Keep small objects away from young children.

  • Tell your child not to put objects into his or her nose. Tell your child to get help from an adult right away if it happens again.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • There is trouble breathing.

  • There is trouble swallowing, more drooling, or new chest pain.

  • The nose starts bleeding.

  • Fluid keeps coming from the nose.

  • A fever, earache, or headache develops.

  • There is yellow-green fluid coming from the nose.

  • There is pain in the cheeks or around the eyes.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
