Care After

These instructions give you information on caring for yourself after your procedure. Your doctor may also give you specific instructions. Call your doctor if you have any problems or questions after your procedure.


  • Lie down for 24 hours. Lie in any position with 1 pillow under your head.

  • For 24 hours, get up only to eat or use the bathroom. Take only 10 minutes to eat.

  • For 24 hours, drink enough fluids to keep your pee (urine) clear or pale yellow. No alcohol.

  • Take all medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Avoid heavy lifting and activity for 48 hours.

  • You may take the bandage off the day after your myelography.

  • Do not take a bath for 24 hours. Ask your doctor if it is okay to take a shower.

Finding out the results of your test

Ask your doctor when your test results will be ready. Make sure you follow up and get the test results.


  • Any of the places where the needles were put in:

  • Are puffy (swollen) or red.

  • Are sore or hot to the touch.

  • Are draining yellowish-white fluid (pus).

  • Are bleeding after 10 minutes of pressing down on the site. Have someone press on any place that is bleeding until seen by a doctor.

  • You have a lasting headache that is not helped by medicine.

  • You have a bad headache with a stiff neck or fever.

  • You have trouble breathing.

  • You feel sick to your stomach (nauseous) or throw up (vomit).

  • You have pain or cramping in your belly (abdomen).

  • You have a fever.

If you go to the emergency room, tell the doctor you had a myelogram. Take this paper with you to show the doctor.


  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
