Marine Toxin Dermatitis

Marine toxin dermatitis is a rash or injury to your skin. It is caused by animals or plants found in lakes, rivers, or oceans.


  • Make sure there is no foreign matter or toxin left on the skin.

  • Do not rub the affected area.

  • Do not put the affected area in cool fresh water.

  • Take all medicine as told by your doctor. You may get medicine to control itching.

  • Follow all orders from your doctor.

You may need a tetanus shot if:

  • You cannot remember when you had your last tetanus shot.

  • You have never had a tetanus shot.

  • The injury broke your skin.

If you need a tetanus shot and you choose not to have one, you may get tetanus. Sickness from tetanus can be serious.


  • You have a temperature by mouth above 102° F (38.9° C), not controlled by medicine.

  • Your baby is older than 3 months with a rectal temperature of 100.5° F (38.1° C) or higher.

  • You have problems breathing.

  • You have puffiness (swelling), redness, or yellowish white fluid (pus) on the skin.

  • Your pain is getting worse.


  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
