Care After

These instructions give you information on caring for yourself after your procedure. Your doctor may also give you more specific instructions. Call your doctor if you have any problems or questions after your procedure.

HOME CARE

  • Watch for bleeding at your biopsy site.

  • No heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling for 48 hours (2 days).

  • No exercise, jogging, or sex for 48 hours (2 days).

  • Do not drive or use heavy machinery for 24 hours (1 day).

  • Go back to your usual diet and medicines as told by your doctor.

  • Do not take the bandage off until the next morning.

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Do not shower or bathe until the next day.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You have shortness of breath or trouble breathing.

  • You have pain or cramping in your belly (abdomen).

  • You feel sick to your stomach (nauseous) or throw up (vomit).

  • Bleeding does not stop from the place where the needle was put in. Press on the place that is bleeding until you are checked in the Emergency Room.

  • Yellowish white fluid (pus) is coming from the place where the needle was put in.

  • You have any unusual pain that will not stop.

  • You have puffiness (swelling) or redness at the place where the needle was put in, or if the place is very sore or hot when you touch it.

  • You have a fever of more than 102° F (38.9° C) for 2 or more days.

  • You have black, smelly poops (bowel movements).

If you go to the Emergency Room, tell the nurse that you had a liver biopsy. Take this paper with you and show it to the nurse. Keep your follow-up appointment.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
