Care After

ExitCare ImageThese instructions give you information on caring for yourself after your procedure. Your doctor may also give you more specific instructions. Call your doctor if you have any problems or questions after your procedure.


  • Change your bandages (dressings) as told by your doctor.

  • Keep the wound dry and clean. Wash the wound gently with soap and water. Pat the wound dry with a clean towel.

  • Do not take baths, swim, or use hot tubs for 10 days, or as told by your doctor.

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Eat a normal diet as told by your doctor.

  • Do not lift anything heavier than 25 pounds (11.5 kg), or as told by your doctor.

  • Do not play contact sports for 1 week, or as told by your doctor.


  • Your wound is red, puffy (swollen), or painful.

  • You have yellowish-white fluid (pus) coming from the wound.

  • You have fluid draining from the wound for more than 1 day.

  • You have a bad smell coming from the wound.

  • Your wound breaks open.

  • You have a rash.

  • You have trouble breathing.

  • You have chest pain.

  • You have a bad reaction to your medicine.

  • You have a fever.

  • You have pain in the shoulders (shoulder strap areas).

  • You feel dizzy or pass out (faint).

  • You have severe belly (abdominal) pain.

  • You feel sick to your stomach (nauseous) or throw up (vomit) for more than 1 day.


  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
