  • Tell your young child not to go outside alone. They should be with a friend, sibling or trusted adult.

  • Make sure your children know their names, phone numbers and addresses and how to reach you using cell phone or pager numbers.

  • Teach your children to get out of dangerous or uncomfortable situations immediately and make sure they know that they can tell you about them.

  • Tell them what to do if they are scared or if there is an emergency. Have a neighbor or other trusted adult they can call. Make sure they know how to call them.

  • Have children tell strangers who ask for directions or help, to ask an adult.

  • Tell children they should never accept a ride from a stranger. Tell them in whose car they may ride. Tell them to never approach a car occupied or not, unless accompanied by a trusted adult.

  • Do not drop children off at malls, movies, parks or arcades. A trusted adult should supervise.

  • Caution children to keep the door locked at home. They should not to open it or talk to anyone who comes to the door when they are home alone.
