Hypernatremia

ExitCare ImageHypernatremia is when the blood has too much salt (sodium) in it and not enough water. Water and salt must be balanced in the blood. This is serious and often an emergency.

HOME CARE

  • Drink enough fluids to keep your pee (urine) clear or pale yellow.

  • Take all medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Avoid foods high in salt. This includes foods that are canned, jarred, frozen, or boxed.

  • Drink fluids after exercise. Drink fluids after throwing up (vomiting) or having watery poop (diarrhea).

  • Ask how to manage the condition that may be causing your hypernatremia.

  • Keep all doctor visits as told.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
