Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver infection. It is caused by a germ called hepatitis A virus (HAV). The germ enters the body through the mouth by food or water that has been made unclean by poop (feces).

HOME CARE

  • Wash your hands after using the bathroom.

  • Wash your hands before handling food or water.  

  • Follow your doctor's instructions to avoid spreading the infection.

  • Make sure people who live with you get the hepatitis A vaccine.

  • Do not take any medicines until you ask your doctor if it is okay.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You cannot eat or drink.

  • You feel sick to your stomach (nauseous) or throw up (vomit).

  • You get confused.

  • Yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (jaundice) gets worse.

  • You are very sleepy or have trouble waking up.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
