Hematuria is the presence of blood in the urine. This condition can result from many problems. Some of these are:

  • Urinary infections.

  • Injuries.

  • Kidney stones.

  • Drug reactions.

  • Tumors.

  • Other diseases.

The treatment depends on the diagnosis. Further studies may be needed to find the cause even if the hematuria subsides on its own. An exam by an urologist may also be indicated.

If you are bleeding heavily, or have prostate problems, clots can form in the bladder and block the passage of urine. This requires emergency treatment with a catheter and bladder irrigation.

Contact your doctor for follow-up care within the next 2-4 days.

You develop a fever, abdominal pain, urinary blockage, vomiting, or any other serious problems.
