Electrical Burn

ExitCare Image Some electrical burns only hurt the skin. Other electrical burns go deep into the body. Deep burns can hurt the muscles, nerves, heart, and other organs. You may need to stay in the hospital.

HOME CARE

  • Keep the burn clean and dry.

  • Use bandages (dressings) and creams as told by your doctor. Change your bandage 1 or 2 times a day or as told by your doctor.

  • Rest the burn area. Keep the burn raised (elevated). This helps lessen puffiness (swelling) and pain.

  • Take pain medicine as told by your doctor.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You have a fever.

  • There is redness or yellowish-white fluid (pus) coming from the burn.

  • You have chest pain or feel short of breath.

  • You feel weak or lose feeling (numbness) in your arms or legs.

  • You have pain and puffiness in your arms or legs.

  • Your pee (urine) is very dark, you feel very tired (fatigue), or you have muscle cramps.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
