Dumping Syndrome Diet

Dumping syndrome is term used to describe a group of symptoms that occur when the stomach empties too quickly. Dumping syndrome usually happens after a stomach surgery or gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. The symptoms may occur 10 minutes to 3 hours after eating.


Symptoms of the stomach emptying too quickly are:

  • Abdominal cramps.

  • Abdominal pain.

  • Nausea.

  • Feeling dizzy.

  • Feeling weak.

  • High heart rate.

  • Sweating.

These symptoms can be controlled by changing the type of food you eat. Avoiding sweet and fatty foods can be helpful. Foods that are too sweet are known as concentrated sweets.


Breads and Starches. These should be limited in general, depending on type of gastric surgery.

  • Allowed: Whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, corn, beans, potatoes without added fat.

  • Avoid: Sweet rolls, pastries, sugary cereals of any type.


  • Allowed: Fresh, frozen, and canned vegetables.

  • Avoid: Creamed or breaded vegetables. Vegetables in a cheese sauce.


  • Allowed: All fresh, canned in natural juice or light syrup, or frozen fruits.

  • Avoid: Canned fruit in heavy syrup, commercially prepared fruit smoothies, fruit juice.

Meat and Meat Substitutes

  • Allowed: Plain beef, chicken, fish, turkey, lamb, veal, pork, ham. Eggs, soy meat substitutes, nuts.

  • Avoid: Creamed, breaded or fried meat, fish, or fowl. Full-fat sausage products.


  • Allowed: Low-fat or fat-free milk, low-fat plain yogurt or light yogurt products.

  • Avoid: Milk (whole, 2%). Half and half, heavy cream, whipping cream.

Soups and Combination Foods

  • Allowed: Bouillon, broth, vegetable soups, clear soups, consommés. Homemade soups made with low-fat ingredients

  • Avoid: Cream soups, chowders. Macaroni and cheese, pizza.

Desserts and Sweets

  • Allowed: Sugar-free gelatin, sugar-free pudding.

  • Avoid: All desserts including sugar-free pies, cakes, candies, cookies.

Fats and Oils

  • Allowed: Small amounts of added fat (1 tsp) including butter, margarines, dressings, vegetable oils, shortening, mayonnaise, sugar-free nondairy cream. Reduced-fat cream cheese, low-fat sour cream, peanut butter (1 tbs).

  • Avoid: Bacon, cream, cream cheese, sour cream, fried foods.


  • Allowed: Sugar-free flavored water, decaf unsweetened tea and coffee. Sugar-free hot chocolate.

  • Avoid: Hot chocolate. Regular sugar and diet carbonated beverages, juice, any other regular sugar sweetened beverages


  • Allowed: Sugar substitutes, sugar-free jam and jelly, sugar-free syrup.

  • Avoid: Honey, sugar, syrup, jam, jelly, chocolate syrup, molasses, brown sugar, corn syrup, agave nectar.
