ExitCare ImageDelirium tremens is the worst form of alcohol withdrawal. It happens when you stop or greatly decrease the amount of alcohol you normally drink. This is very serious and could threaten your life. Most people need to go to the hospital to get treatment, medicines, and to be watched closely.

After getting treated, you must:

  • Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

  • Take all medicine as told by your doctor. If you cannot do this, call your doctor.

  • Keep all doctor visits.

  • Not drink alcohol or use other mind-altering or mood-altering drugs.

  • Not drive or use dangerous machinery until your doctor says it is okay.

  • You start to twitch and shake (seizure).

  • You become shaky, troubled, or nervous.

  • You feel very sick to your stomach (nauseous) and throw up (vomit).

  • You throw up blood. The throw up may be bright red or look like black coffee grounds.

  • You have blood in your poop (stool). The poop may be bright red, smell bad, or look black and tarry.

  • You feel lightheaded or pass out (faint).
