Colposcopy

Care After

Colposcopy is a procedure in which a special tool is used to magnify the surface of the cervix. A tissue sample (biopsy) may also be taken. This sample will be looked at for cervical cancer or other problems. After the test:

  • You may have some cramping.

  • Lie down for a few minutes if you feel lightheaded.

  • You may have some bleeding which should stop in a few days.

HOME CARE

  • Do not have sex or use tampons for 2 to 3 days or as told.

  • Only take medicine as told by your doctor.

  • Continue to take your birth control pills as usual.

Finding out the results of your test

Ask when your test results will be ready. Make sure you get your test results.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You are bleeding a lot or are passing blood clots.

  • You develop a fever of 102° F (38.9° C) or higher.

  • You have abnormal vaginal discharge.

  • You have cramps that do not go away with medicine.

  • You feel lightheaded, dizzy, or pass out (faint).

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
