Clear Liquid Diet

ExitCare ImageYou may be put on a clear liquid diet:

  • Because you need surgery.

  • As the first step in eating food by mouth (oral feeding).

  • To replace fluid when you have watery poop (diarrhea).

  • As a diet before certain tests are done.


You may have any of the following:

  • Strained vegetable or fruit juice (no pulp).

  • Clear broth soup.

  • High protein gelatin.

  • Flavored gelatin or ices.

  • Frozen ice pops without milk.

  • Honey.

  • Coffee or tea.

  • Nutritional drinks that do not have dairy in them.

  • Bubbly (carbonated) drinks only if your doctor approves.


  • Starches like potatoes, rice, corn, or wheat.

  • Vegetables (strained vegetable or tomato juice is okay).

  • Fruit (fruit juice is okay).

  • Meat.

  • Milk or other dairy drinks.

  • Any soups besides those that contain only broth.

  • Bread.

  • Certain desserts. Ask your caregiver.

  • Fats and oils like butter, margarine, mayonnaise, or cooking oils.

  • Pepper or other spices besides salt.

  • Supplements that have lactose or fiber in them. Supplements are things you eat or drink like vitamins, minerals, herbs, or nutrition drinks.


  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
