Bacterial Vaginosis

ExitCare ImageBacterial vaginosis is an infection of the vagina. A healthy vagina has many kinds of good germs (bacteria). Sometimes the number of good germs can change. This allows bad germs to move in and cause an infection. You may be given medicine (antibiotics) to treat the infection. Or, you may not need treatment at all.

HOME CARE

  • Take your medicine as told. Finish them even if you start to feel better.

  • Do not have sex until you finish your medicine.

  • Do not douche.

  • Practice safe sex.

  • Tell your sex partner that you have an infection. They should see their doctor for treatment if they have problems.

GET HELP RIGHT AWAY IF:

  • You do not get better after 3 days of treatment.

  • You have grey fluid (discharge) coming from your vagina.

  • You have pain.

  • You have a temperature of 102° F (38.9° C) or higher.

MAKE SURE YOU:

  • Understand these instructions.

  • Will watch your condition.

  • Will get help right away if you are not doing well or get worse.
