Abdominal or Pelvic Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a painless test used to see inside your body.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

  • Other than water, do not eat or drink for 8 to 12 hours before the test.

  • Follow any other directions from your doctor about eating before the test.

PROCEDURE

  • The doctor will put gel on your skin. The gel may feel cool.

  • A wand (transducer) will be moved back and forth on your skin. The wand sends sound waves through your body.

  • The echoes of the sound waves show up as pictures on a television screen and are recorded.

  • The room may be dark so your doctor can see the pictures better.

  • The ultrasound test takes less than 1 hour.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

  • You can drive and go back to normal activities.

  • Ask when your test results will be ready. Make sure you get your test results.
